I'm in UK and testers failed vehicle on safety test due to end float in rear axle. I have checked it out and bearings are fine. The diff appears worn but not excessivley. How much play would be considered normal and at what point does it become excessive?

This is the test I come up with for TC rear ends, is this what they did? Torque to rotate one full revolution should be 20 lbs.

Other than that what do they mean by excessive end float?

No, this is not the problem. They refer to the shaft movement in and out of the diff (left to right on the car) as end float. There is currently about 2mm (1/8th inch) play.

Here we call it end play. You may have to replace the axle shafts.
