REMOVAL & INSTALLATION AOD & AODE Removal (Cougar, Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, Mark VII, Mustang 5.0L, Thunderbird & Town Car) 1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove torque converter access cover and adapter plate bolts from lower left side of torque converter housing. Drain transmission fluid (including torque converter). Mark torque converter-to-flexplate position for installation reference. Remove 4 torque converter-to-flexplate nuts. Turn crankshaft clockwise (as viewed from front) to access nuts. 2. Mark position of yokes, and remove drive shaft. See DRIVE SHAFT ALIGNMENT article. Install Seal Replacer (T74P-77052-A) in extension housing to prevent leakage. Disconnect and remove speedometer sensor from extension housing. Remove starter. 3. Remove rear mount-to-crossmember bolts and 2 crossmember-to-frame bolts. Remove 2 engine rear support-to-extension housing attaching bolts. 4. Disconnect throttle valve linkage rod or cable from transmission. On Cougar and Thunderbird, disconnect cable from bellcrank lever stud, and remove self-tapping bolt from bellhousing bracket. 5. On all models, disconnect manual rod from transmission manual lever. Remove 2 bellcrank bracket-to-torque converter housing bolts. Disconnect neutral safety switch wires. 6. Position jack under transmission, and raise it slightly. Remove engine support-to-crossmember bolts. Remove crossmember-to-frame bolts. Remove crossmember, insulator support and damper. 7. Remove any interfering exhaust system hardware. Lower jack slightly to access oil cooler lines. Using Cooler Line Disconnector (T86P-77265-AH), disconnect oil cooler lines from transmission. Plug openings. 8. Remove lower torque converter-to-housing bolts. Remove transmission filler tube. Secure transmission to jack using a safety chain. Slide transmission to rear, and lower it from vehicle. Installation 1. To install transmission, reverse removal procedure. Ensure torque converter is fully seated in pump. Lubricate torque converter pilot with chassis grease. 2. Align orange balancing marks (if present) on torque converter and flexplate. Align torque converter drive studs and drain plug with holes in flexplate. 3. Adjust manual and downshift linkage. Fill transmission to proper level with ATF. See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION article. If any shift rods are disassembled, install new plastic grommets. WARNING: When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.
