1989 Lincoln Town Car Lincoln blues

My friend has a 89 lincoln towncar and the starter went out. I put a new starter on it but now its only staying running for so long and the car completly shuts off. We took it to the shop and put a test kit on it and when they put the tester on the battery the voltage pulls all the way from 15 volts to about 9 volts flat. In a matthers of seconds and I know it cant be grounded any where cause I only change the started. Can someone please help.

If the car ran OK until the starter was changed, walk us thru what was done to replace the starter. Please.
