1989 v8 lincoln recently failed an emissions tes with very high hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide while idling the wierd thing was it passed while in gear any ideas what may be causing the emission problems while idling i was thinking maybe the o2 sensor

HC high is untreated fuel going throw he exhaust
most common is tune up
check spark plugs and wires

Thank you for the replies i'll check the plugs and wire as well as the o2 i'll update after it's done
