My car recently had 2 lights on on the dashboard. One says check engine and the other has the icon of the transmission. I drove it this morning and seems that it's driving okay, not sure if it's switching gears. The lights still on. Do you have any suggestions?

With both of those lights on the first step would be to get the vehicle scanned to see what codes are stored and what they point at. It could be an issue in the transmission or with the engine itself. The code(s) would give a direction for diagnostics. It could be something like a sticky solenoid or a speed sensor issue or the light may be for something entirely different.

Good morning,

We need the fault codes that are stored to help narrow the area of failure for you.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/check-engine-light-top-ten-reasons

You can go to a parts store and they will read them for free.

Get me the codes so we can continue.

Thanks, I went to AutoZone to have the codes read, he said his machine starts reading from 1996. Mine is 1995. I’ll go to another auto parts. I saw the machine with this code OPB no idea what it is.

Hi Roy, I got the error codes for my jaguar. There are 4:
P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency below threshold (Bank 1)
P1775 Transmission System MIL Fault.
P0430 Catalyst System Efficiency (Bank 2)
P0727 Engine Speed Input Circuit No signal

Would it cost a lot to fix it?

Thanks

The P0420 and P0430 codes are likely to be very expensive as those are saying that the catalytic converters on both sides need to be replaced because they are not working correctly.
The P1775 is basically a tattletale telling you that there is a transmission code that is making the transmission go into limp mode. The culprit for that would be the P0727 code. It is saying that the power-train control module cannot read the engine speed. That could be from a bad connector or a failure in the ECM. However, I would probably try to clear the codes and then see which ones come back. Then go from there. The cost on the converter replacement depends a lot on where you are as some states allow you to use universal style parts while others require OEM or CARB approved parts and in some cases those are not available.

Just to add what Steve posted and I totally agree, check the charging system for voltage when running. You should have 14 to 14.5 volts running. Then set the meter to AC and check for volts. A lot of times a bad alternator will set codes especially for the transmission as they are very sensitive.

Thank you both. It might be the alternator many times my battery will be dead even though it was a new battery. I appreciate your responses.

That is the code that Steve posted for the fault in the transmission.
