Hi Exhaust cams go to side of head next to exhaust ports. They have a removable gear held on by snap ring. Intakes have a flang like thing after gear. Not sure it is possible to mix up. check it out

the intake and exhaust camshaft pair may have been mixed up. the pair on the left may be on the right and vice versa. or the exhaust camshaft meant to be on the right is actually on the left side of the engine. how do i tell if i put them in the right side of the engine. the engine has suction but no compression. which i think means the two exhaust camshafts need to be switched and that i think i have the intake camshafts in the right place.

how do i tell?

I STILL DONT THINK YOU understand my question, i know what an exhaust camshaft and and intake camshaft look like. that is not was is mixed up right now. i have them paired up correctly but i think i may have but the left pair on the right side of the engine and the right pair on the left side of the engine.

for instance how do you know the left side of the engine from the right?

and how can you tell the difference between the left exhaust camshaft from the right exhaust camshaft so you put the correct exhaust camshaft on the correct side of the engine, and the same with the intake.

With engine at TDC cyl #1 right bank by bulk head cam lobes, marks in line, on both cams should NOT be in contact with valve ie. egg shaped lobe points up from valve follower. any numbers stamped on cams?
