everytime I park my car after a short or long drive and even when the car is idling, I can hear a heat related popping sound coming from under the car in the area under the drivers door. It must be heat coming from the catalytic converter or the exhaust system. I just purchased the car and the previous owner said this sound always came from under the car. Do I have a potential problem here?

it could be oil in the engine dripping from inside the engine onto a hot piece of metal inside. it could also be exhaust i do not think you have anything to worry about.
