Everything worked great on this 19965 Lexus 400 until about 5 years ago the engine would cut off or wouldn't start after driving to a store. We found out that if we let it cool about two hours the car would start. This happned appox. 4 times. The dealer said nothing was wrong.
Recently we were driving it and it cut off and waiting did not work. we had it towed to a mechanic we trust. He has done the follwoing by putting in new parts but nothing worked to correct the problem:
New Ignitors
Coils
Cam and Crank Sensors

He feels the problem is electrical and not gas. Since the new parts didn't work, they were removed and the old parts put back on.

With a problem like this there should be a methodical approach to fault finding, i am unsure as to what diagnostic tests the mechanic under took, but the first thing to do is a scan to check foe any unresolved fault codes, remembering that not all codes will set a fault light, next checking items not directly controlled by the ECU, mainly fuel pump, coils (function tests already done by your posts) plugs leads, thirdly hooking up to a live data scanner to check any missing or out of parameter input signals, i would get him to start here.

When you say there should be a mechical approach to fualt finding and diagnostic testing -- do recommend the LExus dealership, a kToyota dealership that has the equipment to do the diagnostic testing or is there a certain type of "certified technican - with training that I should be looking for when it comes to a Lexus?

Hi there,

You will pay a bit more for a Lexus dealer to do the diagnostics , but they will have the factory test equipment and the training to deal with this. Normally a Toyota dealership will not have a dedicated Lexus tech on staff, well that is the case her in Australia, Lexus & Toyota are separate entities here.
