Driving along and all of a sudden felt like I dropped a cylinder. I replaced coil #2 cylinder two months ago when had same symptoms. I babied truck to auto parts store. Checked codes and above codes came up. I replaced coils 5, and 7 on my own in their parking lot, truck still runs/idles awful! Idles fair for 20 seconds then acts like it’s loading up and smells of rich fuel and white smoke, oil pressure around 60% which is normal for this truck. Towed to a mechanic friend and he’s thinking it’s timing chains, gears and actuators. Had used Cataclean twice in last 1 1/2 years for catalytic converter codes which took care of the check engine light both times. Could this be a catalytic converter issue by chance? Anyone have any experience with this same type situation? In over my head now. Apparently going to be $2,500.00 bill if he does said work. Which is a ton of money to me. Thank you all for any help or suggestions.

Hello,

The P0022 is the problem letting you know the camshaft actuator is not working which is common. The white smoke is a concern as well, does it smell sweet pungent? I would remove all spark plugs and do a compression test before doing anything else while looking at the spark plugs. Here are two guides to help:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-test-engine-compression

and

Can you please shoot a quick video with your phone so we can see what's going on? that would be great. You can upload it here with your response.

Ken,
The puff of white smoke came out after I had turned the engine off. It wasn’t like it was rolling out while the engine was running. The last time I started I left it run for about 20 or 30 seconds and it sounded like it was loading up with fuel which made the white puff of smoke make sense. Yes it did have a sweet pungent smell.

Oh, just FYI, I replaced all the spark plugs about 12,000 miles ago.

It sounds like you have a blown head gasket but to be sure lets run this test.

Please run down this guide and report back.
