Leaking oil

Driving on the highway going up hill would not shift properly. manual shifted then started working fine for about two miles then would shift again heard a clunk noise. when I went to check underneath, my car is leaking oil right where my transmission and engine meet. The car got really hot and would not start. I put a little bit of water and started up, but still making a rough clicking noise. When car on starts leaking oil really bad not sure what is wrong. Can you help please?

What color is the oil that is leaking from the vehicle when it is running? Engine oil is brown and automatic transmission fluid is red.

Check the engine oil and transmission fluid levels. This will aid in determining which fluid is leaking.

If oil is leaking, the causes are most likely the rear crankshaft oil seal or the oil pressure switch (located on the side of the engine fairly close the where the transmission and engine connect).

If transmission fluid is leaking the likely cause is a faulty front transmission pump seal. A worn or damaged front pump bushing is possible, but less likely. A cracked torque converter is possible, but even less likely.

Please let us know which fluid is leaking.

The oil that is leaking is brown and I checked my oil and my transmission and both seem to be pretty good.

Puzzling? Because if the oil is leaking badly when the engine is running the oil level should be below the full mark, maybe even as low as the add mark. It would be a good idea to have the vehicle put on a lift (with the engine running) so that someone could see exactly where the oil is coming from. See if a local shop will do an inspection of the engine at no charge. Sometimes they will.
