1996 Range Rover Four Wheel Drive Automatic

p38, 2.5d, auto, firstly car doesn't start very well, secondly when pulling away 1st to 2nd gear their is a jerking (pulling back) and 'check engine' light flashes when jerking happens, when gears change after 2nd car runs with no problems and no lights flashing, only owned the car for couple of days and never owned one of these, could u help?
