Overheating problem

After a few miles of driving, my car overheats, then after cools itself after another mile or so. This usually only happens once, but it now happens every time I use my car. What are things that I can do myself to fix this problem?

check coolant level is correct .. replace thermostat and flush system .. have a compression test carried out !
