Engine Performance problem
1991 Land Rover Freelander 99,000 miles

We bought this car for our son 3 months ago. 2 months ago we had the oil changed, Radiator flushed, and had the dealership look it over. It started smoking yesterday so my son pulled it over immediately. They are telling us the gasket blew and it is $4900 to repair it. Is there anything we can do to keep this car, it only cost us $3500 but I hate to throw that away. Should we have done something to prevent this, what can we do?

Do I need a professional answer to donate, I just don't know.....
