2003 Land Rover Discovery 2 Fluid too hot?

When it seems to be over 95 degrees temperature outside the vehicle it will not change from 4th to 5th very well. The RPMS will get over 4000 but then we slow down come to stop, give it maybe 5 mins then restart and drive. Then it will not do it again for at least 10 miles.
Can you tell me if the engine itself is getting too hot and therefore the fluid is also getting too hot which in turns causes this problem or is it simpy the transmiision needs more fluid?
