Lack of power when Aircon is turned on

When the Aircon is on the car lacks power.
When I switch the Aircon off it regains power..
This didn't happen before.

Didn't happen before what?
The AC puts a load on the engine so it is normal to have a power reduction. The engine may be getting older and not have the power it once did. I'm assuming you have no check engine light on or other symptoms.

The car in question is a BMW x3 2.0d.
Do you perhaps think it is the turbo that might be faulty?
No there is no warning light
