knocking/grinding noise coming from steering

Getting a knocking/grinding noise coming from steering at low speed. Gets worse the tighter I turn. Yesterday the engine started to feel like it was being held back when coasting or braking. I think it has to do with the drive axle, nearside front. My car is a Mrk 5 Diesel.
