My car cranks but will not start. Thought it could be a fuel problem, changed fuel filter and gas was in the line past the filter. It had a stutter when it starts and for about the first two miles of travel, then it would run fine. Check engine light was on. Now, no check engine light and just will not start. Hooked up diagnostic to plug and got nothing, would not even power the the diagnostic.

Hi Natos, Welcome to 2CarPros.com
Check engine light coming on.

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on-let me know

Is there any way to check if my whole computer is bad?
The fact that the diagnostic would not power up when connected to the plug in the Kia has me thinking that it could be electrical.
All my fuses are good.
Is there a way to test the fuel pump without removing it? The screws holding it in are rusted and I will have to drill them out to remove the pump.

You have to bring it in to the dealership to test the computer for the fuel pump. If you can hear it coming on, check the fuel pressure with a gauge to rule it out. Here is a link on how to check the fuel pressure.

Help!

I just replaced a blown head gasket on a 2000 Kia Sportage, aligned camshaft pulleys (dual cams) alignment marks (I on left pulley, E on right pulley) along with crankshaft alignment marks. Injectors are squirting gas, layed number one plug on engine, could see spark at plug tip while turning over, battery fully charged, just will not start or even seem like it is trying to catch. Any suggestion? Any ideas, any help would be appreciated.

If you have fuel and spark, it should run unless the timing is out (it sounds like you did it right) or there is low compression like the timing is off. Here is a guide to help confirm the issue:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-test-engine-compression

If low here is a guide to help you double check the marks:

https://www.2carpros.com/diagrams/kia/sportage/2000

I want you to do a compression test on the vehicle to see if it is low. If it is, it could be a timing problem or the head gasket/head may need looked at again.

Let me know what you find.

The car had trouble starting the last couple days, today when I tried to start it I heard a slow, faint cranking sound twice then nothing. I was going to test the starter solenoid voltage and try the old tap on starter procedure. When we tried to start the car we noticed there seemed to be a lot of smoke coming from the starter. Should I replace the starter or look elsewhere?

If there was smoke from the starter, check to make sure the wiring to it is not damaged. If it is good, remove the starter and have it checked. It sounds bad. Note: Disconnect the battery before you work on the starter.

If you have the four cylinder you will have to remove the intake manifold support bracket and emissions canister in engine compartment to remove starter. Have fun. Also, double check the starter Bendix tooth pattern make sure they are the same, not close. I had to replace the flywheel because I did not double check.

check battery for condition including load test then check for master fuse blown. See picture and use a test light or volt meter to see if going through it or not. Then try resetting security system see link.

Check battery for condition including load test auto parts do for free. If you mean it turns over but will not run then scan for codes and check fuel pressure with a gauge auto parts rent it.

It was running fine in December but the battery died and ever since then it will not start. It has been at the mechanic since December and the mechanic said when you spray carburetor spray on it the car will start and run until it all dries.

If it runs when sprayed you need to check the fuel system to see if it is getting gas and if not. Why, fuel pump, fuse, relay etc.

Have a helper turn the key to the start position while you check for voltage to the smaller wire on the starter. You should get 12+ volts.

Let me know what you find.

You need an adapter between the fuel filter and the pump.

for the past 6 years our sportage will all of a sudden not start , it will run excellent for a few weeks to a few months and then one day it will not start. After letting it sit eventually it does start and then it will be ok till the next time . My mechanic can not find the problem as the check engine light does not come on [it is working]. The dealer charged $1500.00 for a new gas tank [ claimed that it was rusted inside] and changed the fuel pump still the problem continues. We have had the mother board changed {my mechanic} the fuel filter , sensors, . The dealer claims that they found 2 grounds but did not elaborate where they were. Have changed the clutch safety switch. The clutch makes a sqeaky sound when sitting in traffic and has a light grind feeling to it. We love this vehicle and it runs like new except for this issue could it be a ground , or maybe in the clutch , transmission that causes it not to start . There is no smell of electrical over heat . Please help

yes it does, it feels like it wants to start almost like it is not getting gas , however once what ever it is falls in place it cranks right up with no hesitation. when it is working right the start up is immediate upon turning the key.

very difficult to diag with the car let alone from here without seeing it or touching it.

did anyone check for any history codes???

i would start with fuel pressure test. i would be suspect of the crank sensor. mass air flow sensors have been known to cause issues like this as well.

Thank you , we were not made aware of this , they claimed that they found rust in the tank and being the so called pros we did not question it . How does one submit a bill to Kia . I have looked for a corporate address in the past with no luck.

you can call the dealer for that info. have them run your vin number as there were several recalls that you may not have had done. get a copy of your receipt from the shop and forward it to them for them to give you back the money

Electrical problem
2000 Kia Sportage Automatic 145000 miles

I dont know much about cars so I apologize in advance...

I left the headlights on by accident one day and when I tried to start my car nothing happend. No lights anywhere, no sounds... nothing at all. I came outside later and the window motors were going click click click.. I put the key in the ignition and it stops, take it out and its back to the click click click. I checked back in a couple of hours and the clicking had stopped.

I figured the battery had drained completely so I tried a jump start with a friends car. No luck.

We kept one side of the jumper cables on the battery and touched the other side together and it made a large spark so I think the battery is still good.

My dad checked the fuses in the engine and tried to jump start it again. He was checking if electricty was getting to different parts of the engine
... I really couldnt say which but everywhere he tested was getting power.

His guess is its electrical. I bought the car used and apparently there was an alarm built into the car after the original owner purchased it. By the time I bought it the alarm had been disconnected. Is there any chance remenants of the alarm system shut my car down? Please help, thank you.

Hi:
If the alarm is disconnected, chances are it isn't causing the problem. Did you check to make sure the ground to the engine block is clean and tight? Also, are you getting 12+ volts from the battery? Let me know.

Problems starting car started when the dealer installed a car alarm.
There is a new battery in the car, but no juice is passing to the starter.
Could it have something to do with the car alarm?

I have a 2000 Kia Sportage Ex. The service engine light is not illuminated and no codes are being sent to the OBD II reader. I can go out, start the vehicle, it runs fine, go to the store, park, come back out, try to start it and it will not start. If I let it sit for a while, it will usually restart. Then while driving it, it will sporadically just die and refuse to start. Again, if it sits for a while, it will usually restart and run fine until it either will not restart or dies again while driving it. There is no consistent pattern. We have replaced the fuel pump and problems are the same. It seems like a sensor or switch must be malfunctioning and/or possibly shutting down once the vehicle reaches operating temperature. Then somehow resets itself after the car sits for a while. Any ideas on what I should check next or the likely problem is? PLEASE HELP!
