1996 Kia Sportage Key is stuck in ignition and wont change

The key is stuck in the ignition and will not change gears unless there is a key placed in the shift lock located next to the gear shift.
When the key is placed in the shift lock you can shift gears, but the main key still is unable to be removed from the ignition.

Hi knelg,

Thank you for the donation.

The key interlock system is preventing the key from being removed from the ignition.

The gear shift interlock circuit is preventing the gear to be shifted out of park.

Check if your stop lights are working. If not, check the passenger compartment STOP fuse ( 15 A)

Here is a schematic of the interlock system. Other possible fault could be a faulty AT shift interlock control unit.

Check the ground connectios at right kick panel.
