Computer problem
1996 Kia Sportage 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual

Won't pass smog test. Get several "not ready" readouts at Oregon test stations. Have tried computer reset procedure several times. Am considering replacing ECM module but not sure that will work.

Hi bgbevan,

Thank you for the donation.

It should not be the fault of the ECM and replacing it might not work.

Computer needs to relearn and sometimes it does not get to ready mode because certain conditions are not met. Quite often you need to let the computer do the initial relearn correctly.

Try the following and see if it helps.
Reset ECM.
Place transmission in Neutral position.
Ensure emergency brake has been set and all accessories are turned off.
Start engine and bring to normal operating temperature.
Allow vehicle to idle in Neutral for one minute.
Turn AC on and allow to idle for 5 mins.
Initial relearn is complete, and process will be completed during normal driving.

Driving vehicle would be required for other relearn procedures to be completed. Try to drive without harsh and abrupt accelerator or braking motions.

The first step, "bring to normal operating temperature and then wait 1 minute." This is not a very exact timing. Is it exactly 1 min? How do you know with any degree of certainty if it has reached "normal operating temperature?

The best gauge of operating temperature is to wait till the temperature gauge has stabilizes itself at the normal indicating position for more than 5 minute.

From cold start, it should take about 15 to 20 minutes.
