2002 Kia Spectra My speedometer drops

Engine Performance problem
2002 Kia Spectra Automatic 100410 miles

my speedometer drops rapid;y to 0 and the car feels like it drops in speed then forces it to go back up to speed. I want to know what might the problem be and if its going to cost me an arm or a leg? Also, how bad would the damage be if i still drive it around liken that?

have the throttle position sensor checked/replaced
