2004 Kia Sorento Fuel Guage

Just purchased a used Sorento and the fuel guage goes from "full" to almost empty but uses on 6 gallons of gas. The mileage is about 24mpg. Does the fuel tank have to be removed to fix this?

most likely culprit is fuel level sending unit and it is in the tank
