2005 Kia Rio No Oil Change for almost a year

I've been away for work for about 10 months and left my car with my girlfriend. She drove the car while I was gone but never once changed the oil. I drove it and it tried to stall out if idling for too long. Is there anything that can be done to save the car?

How many miles did she put on it? Was the oil low?
Has the check engine light come on? Also, can you describe in detail what the car is doing?
