Engine Mechanical problem
2004 Kia Rio 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

i know that time belt failure is bad. but I am wondering how serious it can be if the car just died there was no sounds of anything else happening. It just died turning a corner. have towed to kia they say it was the timing belt. they say head is shot but dont know if there is any valva damage. Wouldn't they also know this if they have pulled the head?

Hi there,

If this is a timing belt, you will have bent valves, these are interference engines and pistons will strike valves if the belt fails. This is repairable and a new head should not be required, often it will be only 2 or 3 valves that are damaged so get the head off and get it inspected.
