Engine Mechanical problem
2004 Kia Rio 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Help, car pros !!! On my way back from Florida to Connecticut and broke down in North Carolina - lost all power and "check engine" light came on - drive belts look fine and battery and alternator good - engine cranks, but doesn't catch - sounds like 'freewheeling' when cranking - local "mechan-hack" thinks it's the timing belt - does this sound like timing belt issue to you, approximately how much will replacement cost, and what other damage may have occurred - stuck in motel for now - please advise - I'm desperate in N.C. 2nite !!!

Hi there,

The KIA has an interference engine so the chances of doing vale damage is highly probable, you will have to get the belt replaced and get a comp test done this will prove the valves one way or the other, as for cost, if valve damage has been done, his will be unknown till the head is removed.
