I am trying to replace the fuel pump. I have access to the top of the fuel tank and have removed the electrical connector and the two hoses, however I cannot figure how to remove the locking ring? It is completly smooth and only has eight holes around the top of the ring, can nayone help on this?

You'll need the spanner wrench, or a brass punch and hammer to tap it off without destroying it.

What tests have you run? First thing is fuses and relays, under the hood and in the car, also retrieve any codes stored in the PCM. Then test for power at the connector to the pump.

No specialty tools required.

REMOVAL:

Relieve the fuel system pressure.
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Remove the rear seat cushion from the vehicle.
Clean any dirt that has accumulated around the fuel pump cover so it will not enter the tank during pump removal and installation.
Remove the fuel pump cover.
Disconnect the fuel gauge connector, hoses, and the gauge.
Disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector.
Remove the fuel pump from the bracket assembly.
Remove the seal ring and discard.

INSTALLATION:

Clean the fuel pump mounting flange, fuel tank mounting surface and seal ring groove.
Apply a light coating of grease on a new seal ring to hold it in place during assembly.
Install the seal ring.
Install the fuel pump to the bracket assembly carefully to ensure the filter is not damaged. Be sure the seal ring remains in the groove.
Hold the pump assembly in place, and pull the fuel pump down so that it is tight against the bracket.
Connect the fuel pump electrical connector.
Connect the fuel gauge, hoses, and gauge connector.
Install the fuel pump cover.
Install the rear seat cushion.
Connect the negative battery cable.
Start the engine and check for proper system operation and for fuel leaks.

The fuel pump is located in the fuel tank and is an involved process to replace. I recommend getting a repair manual with step by step instructions and pictures to help identify parts. For me to explain it via the internet allows too much room for error.

I recently replaced my fuel filter on my Kia Optima 2004 2.4L and when done it was not pumping fuel. It is the one that is inside the fuel tank. I tried removing it and wrapped on it to try to jump start it and no good. I then checked the fuse and it was good. Checked around the web and the Kia dealer and there is not an emergency shut off from what I am told. I went and got a new fuel pump, installed it and found that it was doing the same thing, when you crank the engine there is very little pressure pumping the fuel out the top of the pump. What am I missing?

In the future, they put that filter inside the tank to make it non-serviceable. It does not need replacing.
I suspect you have damaged the wiring somewhere and you's have to find out where. You may have left a ground wire off or damaged a plug.

I stand corrected. I see this one is external. It still has to be a wiring issue.

Use a voltmeter to test the voltage going to the fuel pump. It should be battery voltage. Anything below that could mean a bad relay or fuse contact.

With 11.7 volts, it should be sufficient to run the pump correctly. If you are not getting the correct pressure, possible causes are :

1. Weak pump. New pumps are known to fail as well.
2. Insufficient grounding.
3. Leakages between pump and outlet. Recheck the pump to filter installation. Ensure hose between pump and filter is securely attached.

It's possible that you could have pinched one of the plastic fuel lines between the tank and body when putting the tank back up.

If you installed a new pump and now you have a fuel issue then we need to start with checking fuel pressure. Here is a guide that will help with this:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-fuel-system-pressure-and-regulator

You may have a faulty pump and there could be other issues but if we don't know if we have pressure then all else are just guesses. We need to cover the basics and in this case that is the pressure. So let's start there and see what direction we need to go. Thanks
