I recently changed my alternator and my battery drained flat while it was still broke down. I'm going to take the battery to get charged right now. If it's not that what couldn't be?

Can you get a video of how much you can turn the key and what the dash does? Are you able to turn it to the first position or does it not make it to that position? If it doesn't then I would think we have a key issue. Is the key worn and have rounded edges? Do you have another key that you can try assuming this is a metal key?

Let's start with this and go from there. Thanks

Hello I'm Tom,

Yes, they very well could be related. The key locking mechanism, and the mechanism that locks the shifter in park all relate to the safety circuit that low voltage will keep them locked. There are two switches above the brake pedal that makes this happens. Mine was a 1999 but I'm pretty sure that set up they kept a few years It's pretty common. Have you had trouble getting it out of park as well? When this happens the brakes light will also stay on. Sometimes its the switch up above the pedal that goes bad. Not the electrical part of it but its mounting setup. The brake light switch is the one that get miss-aligned a lot of the time too. When you get your new battery in it and you know you have full voltage and the problem still happens let us know. In the mean time I will dig up the diagram and I'll try to find it a pic of the top of the brake pedal to show you what I'm talking about.

Hello,

If there is any tension on the tire making the steering wheel have turn pressure on it the key wont turn, if it was shut off while in the middle of a turn. I've had to jack up the front of the car to release that pressure and it freed up no problem.
I found this as well it may help.
Unable to Turn Ignition Key.
Try to put pressure on wheel to release column lock.
Removed Fuse 18, wait 1 minute, put the key back in and if it will turn, then it's the electronic lock.
If it still won't turn then it is the ignition mechanical key lock and maybe the electronic column lock too.
Find fuse 18 in the back of the passenger's side glove box. Remove the fuse and wait 1 minute. Reinstall the fuse.
If a click could be heard after reinstalling the fuse and the ignition key will now turn. Then the steering column lock module has failed. The ignition key will not turn a second time unless the steering column lock module is reset again.
The Steering Column Lock Module is permanently built into the steering column and can not be serviced separately.
To service it with used parts you will need
the DME (PCM)
The Steering Column
The Ignition Key
The Ignition Key Module
Drivers Outer Door Handle.
They are all programmed to work as a set and replacing just one part will not work.
Below is what a dealer had to say about this also
Let me know how it worked out especially the front wheel turn pressure
