key won't turn.

The key will not turn and this has been happening for the past few days, but got worse yesterday and today. In the past, the occasional key won't turn was resovled by jiggling the steering wheel, but that does not help now. When I could get the key to turn, the car started as usual and there were no issues while driving. The problem seems to be with the inability to turn the key. What is wrong?
