I just finished working on my car, took my battery out. I put the battery back in. Now it doesn't register my key. The only key I have is my valet key. Is there any way to reprogram the valet key without a key fob?

Hi,

It shouldn't have lost memory, but since it is a valet key, anything is possible.

As far as reprogramming is concerned, this requires a scan tool that can communicate with the PCM and has an immobilizer program card. That is a dealer item. However, you may find a locksmith that can do it as well.

Also, I'm not sure you can rewrite just a valet key. Whatever is registered when the rewrite is done is the only thing that will work. You may want to consider a spare key/fob.

I attached the directions below. Take a look through them and let me know if you have questions.

Take care,

Joe

Hi,

Yes, that is what I wanted to see. That doesn't appear as a valet key. That looks like a regular transponder key. The valet keys were usually gray in color.

That key should work to have reprogrammed. However, if you are going to go through the procedure, I would recommend getting an additional key to program as well.

The issue is the scan tool/program needed. I have a feeling you may even find it hard to find a dealer that has what is needed. Have you tried calling around to see if anyone can do it for you?

Let me know.

No, I haven't but I did read if I get a key fob I can then program everything through one process.

I believe that may be the next bridge to cross. You will need to have a fob that is programmed and recognized by the vehicle. However, anything is possible.

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Take care of yourself,
