Hi Ruth,

Please see the picture attached. Is this what your key looks like? If so, I circled the "valet" key in red. Is this the key that you are referring too?

If the answer is yes to all of this, I have bad news for you. There is no way that metal key will start the vehicle. This key is not a "valet" key that you can provide to the valet and allow them to start the vehicle. The FOB that is lost is what has the chip in it that the vehicle recognizes in order to allow it to start. This metal key is only used to unlock the door if the FOB is lost or the battery is dead and the passive entry will not work.

I attached procedure on how to program a new key but unfortunately a dealer will most likely need to be involved.

Sorry to bring bad news tonight. Please let me know if I can help in any other way.

Kenny

Does the vehicle have to be at dealership to be programmed? I live about an hour and half away. Thanks

The vehicle does need to be present in order to be programmed. However, the dealer may have other options so I would call and ask them what they require in order to have this done. Also I would suggest calling around to most of your local shops because many of them have tools that will be able to perform this procedure. This is not a dealer only repair but the dealer will obviously be your best option. However an hour and a half would be a bit far for me as well to have this done. I would find the closest shop that can do it and go with them because it is pretty straight forward.

Only if they have invested in a scan tool to do this. You can try calling a couple but in general they don't have the ability. They just unlock vehicles, replace lock cylinders, and things like that. More than likely you are going to need an auto shop that can program your key.
