Juddering red light with a stop sign turned on?

Driving home it started juddering then red light with stop sign and service light came on. Got home then fan came on water bubbling when looked under bonnet.

If you heard the coolant boiling, it sounds like the engine was overheating. Did you check the coolant level when the engine cooled?
