I'm the original owner of my wonderful 1997 Jeep Wrangler, V6, 4.0 L, with 200K miles, has been doing these things: when I press the gas pedal, it "humps" back and forth violently. Outside temps range about 70 degrees average. The mechanic put it on the scope, said cylinder 2 shows misfire. (It idles rough also.) He checked the fuel injectors and said they're fine. He replaced all sparkplugs, and wires. He put a bit of marvel oil in it, because he thinks the valve 2 is sticking, causing the misfire in cylinder 2. He also added fuel injector cleaner. Afterwards, the check engine light now stays on, and didn't before I took it in. It still acts like it's not getting fuel, especially in the first 3 gears. Once it's at speed on the freeway in 5th gear, it's fine. The mechanic suggested an engine rebuild, since he thinks the valve 2 is sticking. He doesn't do engine work, so it's definitely not a situation of him scamming money. He's a very nice guy and a good mechanic, but he couldn't fix the problem and I don't know whether to pursue an engine rebuild or if it's just the fuel pump, which he says it's not. But, would a faulty fuel pump cause the engine to act like it's not getting gas just in the lower gears and would it cause the engine to run rough at idle? Should I get a valve job and the fuel pump replaced? Thanks a lot for your advice.
