Timing chain on 1995 Jeep Wrangler

I own a 1995 Jeep Wrangler with about 110,000 miles on it. I brought it to the shop to fix an oil leak on the main rear seal and also to change the valve cover gasket. After bringing it in, the mechanic told me that my timing chain was about to break and that it also needed changing. Someone told me that the timing chain was nowhere near the rear main seal or valve cover gasket and that this new, unexpected problem sounded "fishy". Is it possible to see the timing chain while making the other repairs or does this also seem odd to you? If it seems odd, what should I do? Also, approximately what should be the cost of these repairs?
