2006 Jeep Wrangler shifting

wont shift into gear. found a broken piece of plastic underneath attached to cable that looked like a spring but its not a spring. the broken piece is about the size of a dime. A friend held it into place and it shifted fine but i dont think my friend wants to stay there. lol any help appriciated. Cindy

Hey Joe it was the retainer for the linkage. I went to napa, autozone and kragen. Ended up having to buy the whole thing form the chrysler dealer that cost 38 bucks. Midas installed it for 75 bucks. Not to bad I guess but my jeeps back on the road. Thank you for responding to original message. Have a great day. Cindy

I don't blame your friend, but maybe you could get some tie downs so he / she can't move. That would work. (lol)

Really, it sounds like the retainer for the linkage has broken. It isn't hard to replace and shouldn't cost much more than 10 bucks.
