2004 Jeep Wrangler Drive problems

I guess you meant grinding?? Raise the rear of the vehicle up so the tires clear and with it in two wheel drive and non one under the vehicle place it in drive with the brake on. Slowly release the brake and listen for the noise. Have someone liste3n to see where the noise is coming from. Always be careful with a vehicle in the air and be especiallyl careful if you get under it (if you do then support it with more than just a jack).. Get back to us and let us know what you find. Curt

i did mean grinding sorry. i also failed to mention that when it first started i heard loud thud like I hit a huge pothole then the grinding started. When I put it into 4 wheel drive the front wheels go into gear and drive but I still hear the grinding when it is in 4 wheel the noise maybe from the rear or the middle have not had a chance to check where the sound is coming from but I will and get back to you.

YEah, better on a lift. I would focus on the transfer case on this one, but it will be more evident once it is up in the air.

The noise is coming from the rear end, between the pumpkin and the passenger side rear wheel if I have to replace the rear end does anyone know a website that could help give me a walk through

There are a number of websites that are easy to find. Just do a search for 4x4 rear end swap and choose one that you are comfortable with using. If you cannot find one then let me know and i will try and find one for you and send you a link. You should try and pull the pan and axles first and see exactly the problem. It would be cheape and not that hard to replace just one axle than an entire rear end. And that sounds like what is broke???? Look at it first and then get back to us. Thanks, Curt
