Usually or I should say I have never heard them grind? Lift up thr front end properly and safelly with the front wheels off the ground. Have someone wiggle one tire at a time while you watch the steering parts. If they are worn out you will see play in them, everything should move together and be tight with no play. Now the tie rods, passenger side actually goes from the steering knuckle to the pittman arm (its solid up to the adjustment sleeve at the pittman arm) and the drivers side goes from the knuckle to the middle of the passenger side rod we just talked about( with a removable tie rod on each end). To remove them, remove the cotter pin and nut and strike the area where the bolt goes through with a hammer sharply and they should come free. I usually get it all out on the ground and carefully measure from mounting bolt to mounting bolt and make the new parts the same length as the old. You will need to have the toe in set when you are done. Also please be sure to check for the worn parts carefully as grinding is not a normal diagnosis for tie rod ends. Hope this helps. Curt
