I have less than 50,000 miles on my Jeep and at certain speeds 40 -60 (not all the time) and sometimes when I hit bumps the steering starts to shake uncontrollably. It feels like the front end is coming apart or one of the wheels is about to come off. The only way to stop it is to speed up or hit the brakes. Some people have mentioned the struts but with less than 50,000 miles that seems ridiculous. Any ideas?

I would first check the steering components including the ball joints. Based on your description, my first guess would be the drag link. It is a long steel bar that runs about 2/3 arcoss the front end. Check that first.
