My father-in-law's Jeep Wagoneer was running fine. Pulled out of driveway, drove 20 yards and it backfired and died. Has not run since. He has messed with the timing, gets to where it almost starts, or starts and dies imediatly. Will backfire through carberator every time. Can hear odd hissing through carberator. Is this timing, or a carberator needing rebuilt?

It sounds like a timing issue. Do you have a timing light to check it?
