Wow, with this answer please make sure to donate. A clutch disc is set between the engine flyweheel and pressure plate. It is set in there loose and the transmission input shaft slides through it. The pressure plate is bolted to the flywheel and putss pressure against the clutch plate to hold it there along with the trasmission input shaft. There is then what is called arelease or throwout bearing. Along arm s connected to it that leads to the outside of the flywheel housing. A clutch rod is then connected to that held in by a bolt or spring. It is actuated by either a hydraulic slave cylinder or linkage. A hydralulic slave will have a master like a brake system and that will be connected to your clutch pedal. The linkage however will have a bar going from the flywheel housing to the frame and another piece will connect to that which will connect to the clutch pedal arm with either another piece of linkage connecting it. When you push the clutch pedal in, it forces the pressure plate to move away from the clutch disc and that's how it releases so you can shift. I hope this explains it enough.
