I have a grand cherokee

Not everytime I start the car but occasionally, the car sounds like the battery is dead when I try to start it, I keep trying to turn it over and eventually it does turn over BUT in the process I have lost some electricity as the trip meter goes to zero and occasionally the time on the radio reverts to 12.

the local mechaanic put it on the " computer" and there is no abnormality. they suspect fuel pump, starter or computer failure but all are expensive and they want to be sure before they launch into a repair that they know the problem.

I would suggest having the battery load tested, it could be on its way out. I would also have the starter draw tested, or just replace it.
