1999 Grand Cherokee has bad lock actuator in left rear door. Repair looks straightforward, except I can't open the door. It's locked and will not unlock via power lock or manual lock handle. What can I do ti access and change actuator?

Hello and thanks for donating!

You will need to remove the door panel to access the actuator. This can be difficult since the door will not yet open. To make things easier, you can try removing the seat to gain more access to the door panel.

I think I can get the door panel off, but the actuator mounting screw heads are inserted from the door jamb, at least that's how it looks in the Jeep manual. Can't get to them unless the door is open, and the manual lock doesn't work. Is there another trick to getting the door open once the door panel is removed?

Yep, once you get the door panel removed you can then remove the exterior door handle. Once it is removed, should have access through the door handel hole to disconnect the lock actuator. Once you have the actuator disconnected, unlock the door by pulling up on the lock pin. Should be some kind of tab or such to pull which will unlock the door and voila.
