I have a 1996 Grand Cherokee that had a random misfiring, very occasionally. Then it began to start idling rough with what seems misfiring. Changed plugs, rotor and distributor cap. Plugs were worn but coloring seemed right. It run more and more rough at idle, between 750 and 1000, but at higher rpm (>1100) seemed smooth although some roughness remained, however when gas pedal was pressed suddenly, it will become real rough again. Yesterday the Check Engine light went on and it became real rough but repetitive. I don't have access to a computer to check codes for now. I though it maybe an injector ($$) is failing, or that a plug wire is bad, because of the repetitiveness. The plug connector of the first cylinder cable from the distributor looked discolored inside the rubber cover, while the other five plug covers connectors looked shine. What could the problem be, a faulty wiring or a sensor? I really appreciate suggestions to solve this.

If a plug wire looks different than the others, it could be bad, First thing you need to do is have the codes read, Autozone does it free, Post the results with the code number(s). Even if the service engine light is not on, there should be freeze frame data stored.
If it won't make it to Autozone, buy a cheap scanner, they can be had for 30-40 dollars, a good investment, since they cover all cars sold in the USA from 96 on.
If the light is blinking, it means possible damage to the converter. Service it right away!
