why would my 94 jeep grand cherokee limited v8's over heat instead of returning from the overflow to the radiator?

Sooner, or later, the coolant an/or water will dissipate and have to be replaced. When the engine is cold, and not running, remove the radiator cap. Fill the radiator up slowly, until it is almost to the neck. Let it sit a few minutes, and top it off. Then fill your overflow tank to the proper cold level, and you should be OK.
