2006 Jeep Liberty rear differential

How do you know if you need to either repair or just service the rear differential? My car makes loud popping noises when i push on the gas, and if i put it in reverse it makes loud grinding and popping noises.

If it is grinding, it needs repaired. Are you sure it is the differential?
