2001 Jeep Laredo engine function light on

Light was on 2 years ago. Fixed tiny hole in exhaust and light off. Got new tires 1 year ago and light came back on. It's been on for a year.....can I just unhook battery and it will reset? Need emissions inspection and need light to be off. Car runs fine

just have it scanned at autozone and fix what ever its asking, the scan is free.
