Engine Mechanical problem
1998 Jeep Laredo 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 200k + miles

mechanic is telling me timing chain broke and needs to either be replaced for $500 or a new engine because it is possible when the chain broke a rod got bent. So even if the chain is replaced, engine won't work anyway if that rod is bent. Need to know the likelyhood that the rod is bent. Any idea?

best way to know is just replace chain then do compression test on cylinders. if compression is good then no damage was done.
