My '98 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo's reverse lights come one momentarily when put in reverse, but then turn off. What's the problem?

If you wiggle the shifter, do they come back on? If not, chances are the reverse light switch on the trans is either bad, or has a loose or dirty connection.
