1987 Jeep CJ7

I replaced the battery, battery cables and starter, but battery will not hold a charge. Also, headlights and wipers do not work. Engine light does come on when key is turned in ignition. Do I need to check the alternator next? If so, how do I troubleshoot it at home? Thanks in advance for your advice.

You may need to bench test the alternator first for proper current output. Most parts stores should do this for free. I think on these the regulator was switched to an integrated regulator on the rear of the alternator; however, I might be mistaken. If it is external then will be located just in front of the battery on the inner fenderwell.

The alternator should charge the battery at 13.5 to 14.5 volts. If it is outside this range and the alternator tests fine on the bench then the regulator needs to be replaced.

If you need to purchase the regulator, if it is external then you need to make sure they give you the right one. If it is incorrect then it can be even more of a hassle.l
