I have had my CJ since 1984. Years ago the shifting grinded from 1st into 2nd and I simply double-clutched for about a year and the problem disappeared. About 6 months ago, after a period of little use, I noticed the shifting grinded when entering 4th gear so I began double-clutching and the problem was eliminated (unless I failed to double clutch). Yesterday I was driving home in 4th gear (about 35 mph) when I lost 4th gear. It made a terrible racket so I quickly put it in neutral and then down shifted to 3rd (no problem). I drove for a bit and gave another shot at 4th and it made a terrible racket (and didn't seem to be engaging) so I kept it in lower gears and made it home. Can you give me an idea of what problem I have and how much $$$ I will be spending to fix this? Thanks. Eric

With you have to double clutch it years ago that was telling you the synchronizer was going bad. You are lucky it lasted so long. Now What happened is that part of the pieces of the synchrozizer is breakuing up and causing other parts to start to break. With the load bang sounds like a gear inside the transmision is breaking up. You can have the transmission rebuilt or you can go to a automotive recycling center and get a used one. They can tell you what will interchange with the one you have. As for price it may vary, best thing is to shop around and find out what a rebuilder will cost compared to a used one.

See my profile,

Imma CJ Guy and I answer a lot in the CJ 5 & 7 forums. Investigate, if you wish!

Been a CJer forever (since I started driving in 1981)

I am in the same boat as you are, 'cept I'm dealing with a '77 CJ 5 with a 3 speed T-150 tranny.

Mine is not terminal yet, It locked down on me 6 years ago, after showing the same symptoms that it is now.I was dumb and kept pushing it till I really made things severe.I stopped this time, while I can at least move it around the yard and into the garage to rebuild it!

I do not know if you are going to do this yourself, as I am going to do (to me this is expensive enough, but I have done this many times, and I feel comfortable doing the T-150 myself).

This will be 2nd time on this Jeep (third time, if you count one of my previous) and many times for friends. Or if your are going to have it done (EXPENSIVE NOWADAYS!)

MINE AND YOUR TRANNYS ARE DIFFERENT, BUT THESE PLACES DEAL WITH MANY!

PROBLEM IN YOUR HEAD: Rebuild or get a Rebuilt One.2nd route is way more expensive. As you can see, Neither of us is going to get rid of something this good. OUR CJs!

This feller was really helpful to me, and explained things a lot and well. He sorta was trying to talk me into just redoing the top endIf I am going to pull this out, its going back with everything, no sense in pulling it again, getting more stuff, and maybe replacing New stuff I just replaced, tearing up against old stuff!

However, he was unable to come up with some of the parts I wanted for mineI am still looking, I presently have another company searching for the kit they say they can get

WHAT I've GOT HERE IS A LIST OF SUPPLIERS--AND THEIR PRICES FOR AN ENTIRE KIT AS I DESCRIBED I WANTED----"ALL OF THE INTERNALS" (SPARE NONE!) FOR TREMEC T-150 TRANSMISSION FOR A 1977 JEEP CJ 5.

YOU TRIED TO TALK ME DOWN, INTO JUST THE PARTS YOU THOUGHT I MIGHT NEED JUST TO REPAIR IT, TO NO AVAIL, I AM HARD HEADED. HOWEVER YOU DID SELL ME ON "SHIFT FORKS", THAT I DID NOT THINK WERE THAT CRITICAL. BUT YOU HAVE CONVINCED ME THEY MAY HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO MY PROBLEMS, AND I APPRECIATE IT.

ALL THAT IS NEEDED TO BE ADDED EXTRA, BELOW, IS 2 SHIFT FORKSWHICH WE DISCUSSED,

YOU SAID THESE FORKS WOULD MAKE MY TRANNY EVEN HAPPIER.

WITHOUT RESEARCHING THEIR PRICE. YET (INDIVIDUALLY FOR EACH SUPPLIER).I DO NOT THINK ADDING 2 FORKS ON, WILL THROW ME INTO BANKRUPTCY. BUT I WILL ADD THESE IN, SHOULD IT BECOME NECESSARY TO GET MY "BEST DEAL". FROM ANY SUPPLIER.

WHICH WE ALSO DISCUSSED THAT YOU COULD PROVIDE ME WITH (THE BEST DEAL).I REALLY WISH YOU COULD GET EVERYTHING I NEED!

THE MAIN BIGGEST TRAIT I REALLY TRY TO FIND OUT IS:

"WHAT SO SPECIAL ABOUT YOUR THANG--THAT HER THANG AIN'T GOT?"REALLY I WANT TO KNOW TO BE ABLE TO MAKE A COMPETENT DECISION

I WILL BE HAPPY WITH THE THANG I CHOOSE, DUE TO MY THOROUGHNESS, DUE TO THE PAINSTAKING SELECTION PROCESS I GO THRU.

THESE ARE YOUR COMPETITORS. CAN YOU STILL BEAT THE LEAST EXPENSIVE (REMEMBER I STILL HAVE TO ADD 2 FORKS INTO EACH, AT THEIR PRICE)

YES,

EVEN TEFLON BASED LUBRICANTS CANNOT SILENCE THE ANNOYING "SQUEAK" WHEN I WALK!

THANKS,

Nelson (CJ MEDEVAC)

Can I Help More?

If you are not going to rebuild it. There is a number of listings on e-bay motors. There is one that fits your jeep for $500. Checked and they have a number of transmission for various cars. Before you decide to get another one check for any guarantee they might have. They also have a number of rebuilding kits. Be careful with buying off of e-bay and check out the company first. As cjmedvac some rebuild parts can be expensive. Check out all your options and costs.
