Our 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee has 170,000 miles on it and it was running ok until the other day. We broke a serpintine belt and had to have our Jeep towed. The Jeep was towed on a car dolly with the front wheels in the dolly and the transmission in neutral. All seemed fine until we tried to get it off the dolly. We tried to push the Jeep off the dolly (transmission still in neutral) and it would not move. Finally we had to pull the Jeep off. Now when putting the Jeep in gear it make a grinding noise sometimes and it doesn't always go into gear on the first try. At first it wouldn't go into reverse at all, now it will sometimes. Does the transmission need to be replaced or could it be something else?

the trans sound like it gone bad. When towing a rear wheel drive car, you have to remove the drive shaft or the trans will burn up

Yes, it sounds as though the transmission has gone bad. You didn't take the necessary precautions before towing the Jeep.
