power steering

my wife has a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo and it just started making a groaning type of noise,but only when turning the steering wheel to the left! i checked the power steering fluid level which was a little low and refilled it but the noise still persist. whats going on?and can i fix it myself,without going to a mechanic?
